Thomas Coendet earned his PhD from the University of Bern in 2012 and was admitted to the Swiss bar, practicing as an attorney for banking, finance, and regulatory matters at a leading Zurich law firm from 2012 to 2014. He obtained an MJur from the University of Oxford in 2015. In 2016, he joined KoGuan School of Law at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where he served as Shanghai Distinguished Professor before achieving tenure in 2023. In 2024, he qualified as a university professor (Habilitation) at Goethe University Frankfurt, receiving the authorization to teach private law, commercial and business law, legal theory, and comparative law. His academic career has also included research stays at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, the Sorbonne, Oxford, and Harvard.
Thomas Coendet’s research combines classic private law and financial law topics with jurisprudential, socio-legal, and comparative approaches. The role of courts in governing economic processes and the impact of emerging technologies are at the forefront of his work. He specialises in the law of obligations, banking and financial regulation, theory of legal reasoning, as well as methods of comparative law, with a particular focus on East–West relations. He has contributed to The Cambridge Handbook of Comparative Law and The Elgar Encyclopedia of Comparative Law. In his current book project, he explores the co-evolution of law and financial markets, focusing on German and English derivatives litigation since the 1970s.
